How to use a rice cooker?

I purchased a panasonic rice-o-mat at a yard sale and it didn't have directions. It has the electric outside base,a top, a metal inside bowl, a small plastic cup, and a plate with holes in it.Can anyone tell me what the pieces are for, how they're used and rice/water ratios?

  1. The metal bowl goes inside of the electric outside base (think crock pot), the small plastic cup is basically a measuring cup for rice and water. The plate with holes in it can be placed on top of the metal bowl and you can put things like veggies on it, to steam while the rice is cooking. The ratio is, typically, 1:1, as in one plastic cup of rice to one plastic cup of water. Basic rice rule of thumb: the smaller the grain, the stickier the rice. Sticky rice is perfect for onigiri or rice balls, while long grain might be good as a bed for a meat, like chicken or pork chops.
  2. the plate is used for steaming veggies or whatever.to cook rice,1/2 c per person is how i measure rice.add water until it reaches the 1st joint on your 1st finger.measure from the top of the rice.
  3. If you look at the "inside bowl" it probably has some lines/marks on it (that may even be numbered from 1 at the bottom to however many marks it goes up to near the top). Measure 1 plastic cup of raw rice per serving you want to make, rinse the rice several times until the water runs clear, rub the bowl inside with a little oil, the put the rice in. Add water until it comes up to the number on the side that's the same as how many cups of rice you put in. Plug it in, put the lid on, and turn it on. It will go "clunk" when the rice is cooked....don't lift the lid for four or five minutes (longer if you don't need it just yet), then you can fluff the rice & serve it....
  4. Here is your answer. The metal base should have the setting control knob on it. It sets the time and temp. automatically. The metal bowl is to put your rice and water in, it sits inside the base. The small plastic cup is for measuring out how much rice you want to cook. It should have measuring lines on it. The metal plate with holes in it is for steaming foods or veggies. It sits on the edge rim of the base inside the metal bowl. And the top is just that. Always put the top on, as it steams every thing. The ratio of rice to water is easy, i.e. 1 cup rice to 2 cups water. The water should just cover the top of the amount of rice you have inside. When you do use it, invite me over and we can have rice together. Have fun.
  5. Download your manual here: http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/support/Home-Appliances/Kitchen-Appliances/Rice-Cookers/model.SR-W06PD Bert
  6. Rinse the rice and drain the water out. normally, one cup jasmine rice or other similar "oriental" rice to one cup water. Push button and let it cook . . . when the button pops up. it is finished. You can add a little salt to the water. 2 cups rice - - - 2 cups water 3 cups rice - - - 3 cups water tc etc . . . I can't say how many cups of rice you can cook in your pot, but there should be something written on the side of the rice pot marking how many cups. Shoyo sauce or sprinkle a little nori and eat. http://www.kgrocer.com/ajinorifurikake-19oz.aspx The plate with holes is for steaming vegetables. Place metal plate in pot. Wash vegetables . . . Add vegetables like brocolli, carrots, potatoes, and only 1 cup water. Push button and let it cook. When button pops up, it is finished. Simple . . .
