Wholesale Matting

How do I salt my yard to prevent growth ever again?

I'm looking to salt the ground between my fence and the streets. I'm surrounded by 3 streets, so nothing can grow there anyways as I'm constantly having to go out and pull weeds or get citations for not keeping the area clear for drivers/walkers. I want everything to die to save myself time and trouble. I previously tried using the filter fabric stuff, the black mat, and it didn't work. The weeds forced themselves through it. That's how bad it is. From reading it looks like rock salt is the stuff to use, but how much per foot? I also heard about using vinegar or bleach, but I'm afraid of the smell would cause complaints. I do fully understand that by salting nothing will ever grow again, sorry to repeat myself, but that's the point. City doesn't allow anything to grow there anyways and for years I've been manually pulling and spraying and using black mat stuff to no avail. Thanks in advance, hope someone can help with the salting.

  1. diesel.kills everything.
  2. I hope that you find the answer you seek. However, I would add an exception to assumption "everything to die to save myself time and trouble." Dandelions can fly in.... 5lbs. bags of rock salt cost $35. They will cover 2 square feet.
  3. I agree with the first answer : douse it with petrol (don't light up though) it should kill everything there for several months at least.
  4. Sounds like your best bet is to dig out the top soil then lay down a layer or two of black plastic then cover it with a thick layer of gravel about 6 inches deep, don't forget to put a frame of 2x6's around the sides so the gravel doesn't spread and stays where you want it. this method can be a little work but will last for years.
  5. there's an old saying... "Mother Nature hates a vaccum'.... meaning that if there's an empty space anywhere, Nature will find a way to fill it with something growing...... like the other person said, dandelions will fly seeds in to settle there, or another plant's seeds will.... even into the rocks suggested..... the only way to finally end your trouble is to concrete the whole area.... and even then, the cracks will hold enuff dirt for a seed to find a place to grow.... don't add things to the soil that are illegal (diesel) or chemically based or apt to ruin the soil like salt.... that soil contains other living things besides weeds, ya know?..... and you don't want diesel in your drinking water!.... just do it right and stop having to deal with it....'you can even make it pretty by embedding stone into it as it's poured..... http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/4914318/161353-main_Full.jpg http://www.ehow.com/how_4914318_rocks-out-concrete.html http://www.gardenwiseonline.ca/gw/gardens/2007/08/16/design-drought-hardy-landscape (that one to see the flat stones and how they'd look)
